Introduction to Microgrids

Online Short Course

The “Introduction to Microgrids” online short course is designed to introduce PV designers and installers to microgrids, which are increasingly recognised and valued by network providers and policy makers. It covers the operation and mechanics of a microgrid, identifies some of the regulatory implications, and proposes practical pathways to microgrid implementation for renewable energy industry participants.

The course content touches upon various subjects including:

• What is a microgrid – definition, components (including monitoring and communications), different classifications
• The role of microgrids – electricity network, how microgrids can be incorporated into the electricity network, what the benefits of having microgrids are
• Implementation – When to use microgrids versus Stand Alone Power Systems (SAPS) versus Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) versus embedded networks, which standards to follow, application process case studies

The course equips the audience with a strong understanding of microgrids and associated technologies. It aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to be part of projects that include the design and management of microgrids which can improve energy access, resilience, and sustainability in communities and industries around the world.

The course is relevant for installers, engineers, project developers, homeowners, site managers, and other non-technical people connected with the industry who would want to acquaint themselves with operation, mechanics, and regulatory framework of microgrids.

This course is eligible for 20 CPD points with the Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA), valid until 30th of July 2026, and 2 hours professional development with Engineers Australia.
